Why the bench keeps them next to the BAC water
A multi-dose vial is designed to be pierced repeatedly, and the rubber stopper is the only barrier between the contents and the room. Wiping it with a fresh pad before every single draw — not just the first — is what keeps that barrier doing its job for the life of the vial. Pads are the cheapest consumable on the bench and the one most likely to be the reason a vial stays good or does not.
How to pick the right pack size
Usage tracks draws, not vials: a bench doing several draws per vial gets through pads several times faster than it gets through BAC water. Box of 100 suits a single-room practice; box of 200 is the usual reorder for anywhere running more than one bench. - Why 70% isopropyl alcohol and not something stronger?
- 70% is the standard for surface disinfection. The water content slows evaporation so the alcohol stays wet on the stopper long enough to do its work, and it helps the alcohol penetrate rather than simply flashing off. Higher concentrations dry faster and are generally considered less effective for this particular task.
- Do I need a fresh pad for every draw?
- Yes — a pad is single-use. Wipe the stopper with a fresh pad before each draw and let it air-dry before piercing. Reusing a pad, or wiping a second vial with the same one, defeats the point.
- Should I let the stopper dry before piercing it?
- Yes. The alcohol does its work while it is wet and evaporating; piercing immediately drags residual liquid into the vial. A few seconds of air-drying is all it needs — do not fan or blot it dry.
- Can I order alcohol pads on their own?
